Islamic principles. But the halal food market has exploded in the past
decade and is now worth an estimated $632 billion annually, according
to the
Halal Journal, a Kuala Lumpur-based magazine. That’s
about 16% of the entire global food industry. Throw in the fast-growing
Islam-friendly finance sector and the myriad other products and
services — cosmetics, real estate, hotels, fashion, insurance — that
comply with Islamic law and the teachings of the Koran, and the sector
is worth well over $1 trillion a year.

SMIDEC Approved RM15.05 Mln To SMEs In Halal Business As Of March

Malaysia’s Small and Medium
Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC) approved RM15.05 million as
of March 31 this year for the development of Small and Medium
Enterprises (SMEs) in the halal industry. Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mukhriz
Mahathir said the funds, given through grants for the development and
promotion of halal products, involved 253 applications.

challenging economic environment, according to the Netherlands Foreign
Investment Agency (NFIA).



“Enquiries have not diminished despite the global economic slowdown.

Halal Exchange expects to double supplier base

HALAL Exchange, a web-based platform for buyers and suppliers to
showcase their products, expects to double its supplier base in
Malaysia to 200 this year.




At the just-ended MIHAS, major retailer Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd
came on board to use the exchange platform. The platform enables the
retailer to have a comprehensive global sourcing solution ensuring
visibility to an international base of suppliers and increased
administrative efficiencies for trade processes.





“It provides

A talk on the use of ‘halal’ labels, which came into force beginning August 1, 2008 in Brunei Darussalam was delivered by Zurina Salwa binti Hj Osman, an education officer from the Halal Food Control
Section at the Syariah Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs. During the talk, she highlighted the use of ‘halal’ labels, which came into force beginning August 1, 2008.
She also touched on the roles and responsibilities of the Halal Haram Control Section in ensuring imported
products are halal, as well as the process towards securing the halal label, among other topics.
