200,000 Canned Drinks Seized For Carrying Expired Halal Logo

BUKIT
MERTAJAM, Nov 21 (Bernama) — Some 200,000 canned drinks of various
flavours worth about RM200,000 were seized by the Islamic religious
authority from a company in Taman Selamat here today for carrying an
expired Halal logo.

Principal assistant director (Enforcement and Prosecution) of the
Penang Islamic Religious Department (Jaipp), Jaafar Ismail said the
noon operation found that the company was still using the Halal logo
issued by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) although it had
expired in 2006.

The raid was conducted with the cooperation of the Penang branch
of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and Jakim.

It is understood that the company had applied to renew the halal
certification but was rejected by Jakim as it had contravened certain
conditions.

The case is being investigated under the Trade Description Act
1972 which carries a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to three years’ jail
or both for the convicted individuals, or a fine of up to RM250,000 for
the errant company.
