valued at US$570 billion during 2005. And with the total spend on
logistics operations accounting for around 5-10% of total revenue, its
not surprising that logistics companies all over the world are keen to

Malaysian subsidiary TraceTracker Malaysia Sdn Bhd recently signed a
Teaming Agreement to develop a low cost mobile Halal food traceability
device.

Malaysia starts ‘double dip’ shipping service for Pakistan

Malaysia has commenced its upgraded Halal Express Service (HES) for
Pakistan with the maiden call of a large vessel at Pakistan
International Container Terminal (PICT) on Monday. ‘The volume of
bilateral trade between Pakistan and Malaysia was recorded at $1.8
billion during last year,’ Malaysian Deputy High Commission to
Pakistan, Mohammed Khalid Abdul Razak told in a ceremony held at PICT
to mark the commencement of HES.

Asian RFID Outlook Predicts Opportunity in Halal Sector

& Sullivan has identified many strong RFID opportunities in the
Halal food industry, which requires documentation that foods were
prepared and transported in accordance with Islamic law. Without tight
focus, vendors could miss this and other
specific opportunities throughout the food supply chain.

Thailand develops logistics in bid to become regional Halal hub

Chulalongkorn
University’s Halal Science Centre has joined regional company Halal
Global Services to develop a Halal Super Highway to promote Halal foods
and products in both domestic and global markets. As a
result, Thailand is expected to become a Halal logistics hub – or
so-called Hogistics Hub – for the Southeast Asia region before the end
of next year. 

MISC’s halal express service to start April 1

MISC Bhd, a Malaysian shipping company, said its new halal express service will
start on April 1 and offer clients more direct calls and cover more
ports. The service will cover the Far East, Southeast Asia, Indian
Sub-Continent and Middle East and will be operated by MISC
independently.

Active participation from China sought for Senai Airport

SENAI
Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) is seeking active
participation from China in its quest to transform Senai into a
regional transport hub.

It was reported that MMC International
Holdings Bhd planned to offer 30% equity in SATS to a company from
China to develop the airport into an aviation hub or a duty-free zone.

Penang to Develop Halal Hub

Dr. Mohamed Amin Kassim, deputy director of Urusan Century Logistics
Holdings, will chair the committee with members representing 17
companies and organizations.

“The companies involved will be clustered according to their needs
and sector,” said Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, chairman of the state
committee for domestic trade and consumer affairs.

HDC Awaits Tamadam Proposal on Halal Park Logistics

HALAL Industry Development Corp Sdn Bhd (HDC) is waiting for Tamadam
Bonded Warehouse Bhd’s proposal on logistics infrastructure framework
for halal parks in the country. Also in the article is the number of Halal certifications that HDC has approved so far out of the 380 Halal certification applications that have come in so far.

Brunei Agriculture Dept Signs Pact With UK Firm On Agro Park

The Department of Agriculture, under the Ministry
of Industry and Primary Resources, yesterday signed an agreement on
the Agro Technology Park with SQW Consulting of the United Kingdom
at the Agriculture Department headquarters. SQW
Consulting will assist the Ministry of Industry and Primary
Resources in carrying out studies and providing recommendations on
the operational aspect of the new 263-acre Agro Technology park in Tungku.

Malaysia Needs To Rebrand Halal Concept Before Penetrating Europe

About 130 participants consisting industry players, government
agencies as well academicians attended the World Halal Forum Halal Industry dialogue in The Hague where they got an
insight into the prospects of developing the halal industry in the
Netherlands and using it as a springboard to the European countries.



Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC)’s chief
executive officer Datuk Jamil Bidin said, Malaysia needs to rebrand its halal concept first before tapping the lucrative European market.
Surprisingly, he noted that most participants were non-Muslims, a
clear indication halal products have certainly garnered attention in
the Dutch market.

Netherlands can be Gateway for Halal Products into Europe

Changing the mindset of the Dutch
about the virtues of halal food, though tough, is still a worthwhile
pursuit as the Netherlands is not only a lucrative market, but a
potential gateway for such products from Malaysia to Europe.

The Hague city Vice Mayor, Henk Kool, said it was possible to
change the perception of the Dutch as “they are open-minded and can be
very enthusiastic about the goodness of halal foods.” Currently, there is a perception among the Dutch that halal food
is only for Muslims. “You have to change that perception,” he said.

Malaysian Halal Exporters Urged To Meet Europe’s Stringent Halal Standards

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian halal manufacturers have
been urged to meet the stringent standards set by Europe in order to
penetrate the growing halal market in Europe.




It is important for the exporters to have the right certification,
transport documentation in order to meet the demands of the European
Muslim consumers for “safe, healthy food,” said the managing director
of Eurofrigo B.V, Derk van Mackelenbergh at a seminar jointly organised
by the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands Embassy and the Netherlands
Foreign Investment Agency here Tuesday.
