Malaysia Has Potential To Be A Major Producer Of Halal Vaccines

Malaysia has the potential to be a major producer of halal
vaccines in the world, Deputy Minister of International Trade and
Industry, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said. He also stated that through the ministry, entrepreneurs
undertaking this type of business, were being encouraged with a lot of
incentives, loans and grants.

Intertek and IHIA enter tripartite co-operation and collaboration on Global Halal Management System with two Halal Certification Bodies

Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions to a
wide range of industries, has joined the International Halal Integrity
Alliance (IHIA) in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the
Central Islamic Committee of Thailand (CICOT) and Halal India Pvt Ltd
(HI) to implement the Global Halal Management System (GHMS). The GHMS is a set of standards and regulations for which the Halal
Certification practice is set against to implement a global
accreditation standard.

Mimit eyes global sales of GoHalal system

The Bruneian IT company, MIMIT E-Technology, aims to hit the global market with its recently
developed GoHalal system. It is an online Halal food verification system, the first of its kind
in the world. It does not give
certification but helps to facilitate halal accreditation for food.

The ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AIFTA), which has been concluded, after protracted discussions, is a strategic event that holds promise for both parties. The agreement is noteworthy as it completes ASEAN’s links with Asia’s two major

Malaysia – Procter & Gamble (P&G) has had its potato crisp brand Pringles certified by Malaysia’s Halal authority JAKIM. All Pringles labels have started to carry the Halal logo from December 2009.

Malaysian PM intends to tap opportunities in Saudi Arabia

JEDDAH — Malaysia intends to take advantage of ample
economic opportunities offered by Saudi Arabia, with Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak describing relations between the two Muslim
countries as “very important and strategic”.
He said Saudi Arabia’s US$144 billion budget for 2010 should

Accountant General, Treasury Department, Ministry of Finance has been
appointed as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and

Neda Urges Private Firms to go into Halal Food Production

THE National Economic
and Development Authority (Neda) urged the private sector to explore
prospects of going into halal food production, which is also in step
with the goals set in the updated Medium-Term Philippine Development
Plan (MTPDP).

Guidelines For Halal Medicines Published

BMI notes that one company – Canada’s Viva Pharmaceutical
- has already expressed an interest in establishing a US$12mn
halal-certified manufacturing plant in Brunei. Up to 100 local people
could be employed at the facility. Because of this potential economic
stimulus, it is our view that other countries, such as Malaysia and
Indonesia, will emulate Brunei and formalise rules for the manufacture
of halal medicines.

Brunei signs MOU supplement with Japanese company

THE
Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Brunei Economic
Development Board (BEDB) and Pharmex Japan Co Ltd yesterday signed a
Supplement to the Memorandum of Understanding which extends the duration of the MoU that was signed on February 28, 2008, by a further two years. The MoU will further firm up details which could potentially lead to
the setting up of an estimated US$250 million manufacturing plant in
the planned Agro-Technology Park in Brunei Darussalam.

Malaysia: AYS Plans To Penetrate Overseas Market With Food Products

AYS Sdn Bhd, which
produces the first microwaveable halal frozen ready-to-eat Malaysian
meals under the Sri Kulai brand, hopes to penetrate the overseas market
by middle of this year. Chief executive officer Liow Ren Jan said the company was looking
at Dubai as its first overseas market due to the increasing demand

Corporation will jointly host a halal food seminar during January 18-21
in Hat Yai, Songkhla. About 20 Malaysian investors will be invited for
