A new committee will be formed to establish guidelines of the Muslim World League on Halal slaughter and food production. The responsibilities of the new committee will include the development
and implementation of educational programmes for manufacturers on the
approved guidelines for Halal slaughter and processing.

An industry panel has been set up to issue guidelines on how halal food
is produced and sold, a move that seeks to streamline the estimated
$500 billion a year global market. Delegates attending the recent Global Halal and Islamic Business
Forum in Abu Dhabi called for the setting up of “monitoring offices”
around the world to work with “recognised Islamic centres to conform to
the halal protocols for all foodstuffs to be imported into the GCC
region.”
Delegates at the Global Halal and Islamic Business Forum have
unanimously endorsed recommendations from the Gulf Standards Authority
regarding global Halal industry guidelines. A statement, read out by Mr. Khaled Al Zamoul from the Kuwait
Municipality, confirmed that a committee will be formed to establish
guidelines of the Muslim World League regarding Halal slaughter and
food production.
Halal airlines and women-only hotels are just some
of the up and coming investment trends currently gaining global
popularity, according to a recently released global trends report
published by World Tourism Market (WTM). The
report also said Saudi Arabia and the Gulf should do more to promote
the Islamic tourism market and urged the region to take a more
assertive role in pursuing the wealth of investment opportunities in
the market, noting that “it is critical for Middle Eastern countries to
take concrete steps to develop halal tourism internally.”
Consolidating
its presence in the UAE market, Al Islami Foods, a leading halal food
producer in the region, today signed an agreement with Al Ain
Cooperative Society to establish Al Islami Meat Shops in Al Ain Coop
supermarket branches, an initiative to introduce exclusive and
authentic Halal outlets across the UAE.
The success of Halal World Expo, held at the Abu Dhabi National
Exhibition Centre this week, predicts even greater growth for this fast
growing global industry sector.
“The Halal food market currently accounts for as much as 12 per cent of
the global trade in food products,” said Christine Weaver, Exhibition
Director for Halal World Expo. “The Muslim population is projected to
constitute 30 per cent of the world’s population by 2025, meaning Halal
food could easily account for 20 per cent of world trade in food
products in the future.”
Khazan, one of the Gulf’s
leading producers of Halal meat food products, is to invest AED60
million in a new meat factory in the region as part of ambitious
ongoing expansion plans. The
company made the announcement today from its exhibition stand at Halal
World Expo, the new international trade show taking place at the Abu
Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, and also confirmed that it is looking
to break into the US$16 billion Halal food market in the US.
Abu Dhabi will become the focal point for the $2.1 trillion a year
global halal industry next week as leading manufacturers and suppliers
assemble in the UAE capital to debate issues vital to the growth of the
business worldwide. This is the first serious Halal-based forum and expo to take place in the UAE, a timely indication that the Arab presence in the market may be on the increase.
The issue of Halal tourism continues to get attention, with Oman Air also coming into the picture. With the expected rise in Middle eastern tourism, plus the increasing number of Muslims who travel are likely to mean that this issue will get some serious consideration. As with other similar issues, the question will be how to attract the Halal traveller without alienating the rest of the market.
New trends identified at the opening of the World Travel Market 2007 in the UK
included the rise of Halal tourism in the Middle East, the role of
mobile phones in revolutionizing the Asian travel industry and the
growth of “voluntourism.”

signing a strategic joint venture with UK-based foodservice distributor
