Malaysia: USM exports Halal collagen to China

Research collaboration between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Holista Colltech Limited will see Malaysia supplying 30 metric tons of halal collagen to China. The ovine (sheep) collagen has never been produced by any one else in the world. This would probably make Malaysia a global hub for the production of halal collagen.

HALAL COLLAGEN FOR THE WORLD

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 NOV: Research collaboration between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the Doping Control Centre and Holista Colltech Limited, a company with national Bionexus status will see Malaysia supplying 30 metric tons of halal collagen to China.

Even more interesting is the fact that the ovine (sheep) collagen has never been produced by any one else in the world. This would probably make Malaysia a global hub for the production of halal collagen.

Prof. Aishah A. Latiff, Director of the Doping Control Centre, USM said that the high demand for collagen in the world market has resulted in the growth and expansion of the industry, the demand would increase even further when there is an offer to provide halal collagen products.

“Collagen is not only used for cosmetic purposes but is also used widely in the medical field especially to treat post-surgical wounds.

“With halal collagen, we expect a drastic growth and increase in both industries and assuredly, we hope to make Malaysia a global hub for halal collagen,” she said.

She said this after the MoU signing ceremony between USM and Holista Colltech Limited which was witnessed by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Hj. Mohd. Yassin, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. The MoU signing ceremony was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre at the official opening ceremony of the BioMalaysia 2010 exhibition today.

Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, the Vice-Chancellor of USM signed the MoU on behalf of the university while Holista Colltech Limited was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Dr Rajen M.

A second MoU will focus on efforts by both parties to develop other products, besides ovine collagen

“Among those we are targeting are halal feed for livestock and additional health products. This will enable us to maximise the use of ovine collagen. We also expect that this research will begin to show results within six months,” she said.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Fadilah Yusof; Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek bin Haji Hassan; the Chairman of BiotechCorp, Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus; and Chief Executive Officer of BiotechCorp, Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood.
