Technology will take Malaysians firms up halal chain

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 11 — Malaysia’s halal industry can move up the
value chain if collaborations are forged with technology-driven firms
to produce more products or components which are Shariah-compliant.

In realising this, Halal Development Corporation Sdn Bhd Chief
Executive Officer, Datuk Jamil Bidin said Malaysia should attract firms
strongly involved in research and development (R&D) to create
innovative products, not only in the food but non-food segments as well.

“Going forward, we must be innovative and creative to penetrate the market in the future as consumer demand increases.

“We can find the opportunity to work together with research
institutes in the United States to further improve innovation, and this
can make Malaysia an expert with competitive edge in the halal
industry,” he told Bernama here on the sidelines of a trade and
investment mission to the United States, led by the Malaysian
Industrial Development Authority (MIDA).

Jamil said multinational firms, involved in industries like
pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, were always on the look out for new
products to address demand in the market. — Bernama
