Nestlé investing RM320mil this year

Nestlé managing director Sullivan O’Carrol said a growth area for Nestlé was the export of halal products to Europe. “We started exporting halal products to Europe about a year ago and the uptake has been encouraging,” he said. He added that there was a growing Muslim population in countries such as the Netherlands and Germany.

O’Carrol
said Nestle’s tie-up with established hypermarkets such as Tesco,
Carrefour and Giant would help ensure its products were well
distributed and accessible to consumers globally.

Swedish Muslim group: ‘Make halal slaughter legal’

The Muslim Association of Sweden (SMF) has renewed calls for the legalization of religious slaughter practices such as kosher and halal. In a letter to the Swedish government, SMF chairperson Mahmoud Aldebe,

The EU Agriculture Committee has approved a proposal to update the rules on animal welfare at slaughter, giving the green light to halal poultry,  meaning that stunning prior to slaughter is not compulsory for Halal producers. New spot checks by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration
refute the rumours of pig proteins in chickens that arose after a
programme on Danish TV2.




A television programme called ’Operation X’, shown on Danish TV2 on 5
February, focussed on whether pig protein had been added to marinaded
chicken products. This resulted in rumours in an Arabic newspaper
saying that Danish-produced chicken meat contained pig proteins.

A North-Wales abattoir is to re-open after administrators secured the
sale of the facility to Ireland-based Sher Foods for an undisclosed
amount. Sher Foods run by Arfan Sher Rafique, the son of post-war Pakistani

Dale Primary School in Derby, England is to have only Halal meat on the school menu for certain days of the week. The reason being, that if the meat being served on the day is not totally Halal, there could be

State Minister for foreign trade Kursad Tuzmen has held separate
meetings with Iranian Agriculture Minister Mohammed Reza Eskandari and

UK Farming Minister Kennedy launches animal slaughter consultation

UK FARMING Minister Jane Kennedy has launched a consultation on proposed new rules on the welfare of animals at slaughter. The rules follow an EU proposal and will see
measures introduced for all animals including poultry to ensure animals
are slaughtered by a method that leads to instant death or death after
stunning. She also confirmed exemptions would be available for
slaughter in accordance with religious rites, such as for Halal and
Kosher meat.
