Gulfood Highlights Global Industry Trends for 2010

Once again the GCC’s biggest food exhibition, Gulfood 2010, is rolling out next month in Dubai on the 21-24 February. What Halal Focus has found of interest this year is that for the first time they are organising an industry related Gulfood Conference in answer to feedback from

their exhibitors requesting one. In looking for

‘key market influencers within the region and international industry’ to speak, they came up with two speakers on Halal. Not a topic normally presented at this huge show in the middle of the Muslim world, surprisingly.

The talks will be presented by Jochen Zoller, President of Food Services,  Intertek, on Day 1 and Alex Andarakis, the new CEO of Al Islami, on Day 3.  You pay per talk/session, not for the full 4 day conference, which may be a way of pulling people away from selling at their booths to listen, and also an interesting way to narrow down which speakers are really drawing the crowds. We wait with interest to see what size crowds the Halal related sessions pull in! Will Halal be the new ‘Global Mega Trend’ as suggested by Alex Andarakis in his talk?

Arabia takes the New Silk Road to China, spurning the West

The link between China and the Middle East is not immediately visible to the distracted Western eye. You have to know both regions intimately, and speak
both Arabic and Mandarin. One of the few to combine these skills is Ben
Simpfendorfer, China economist at the Royal Bank of Scotland and author of The
New Silk Road
.

“These are regions with very rich civilisations that both experienced
colonial occupation, and feel that they have fallen. Both peaked around the
same time in the golden years of the 1500s, and now there is this sense of
shared destiny that China and the Middle East are back and rising again
together,” he said at the annual FIKR Arab Thought summit in Kuwait.
