Demand for Shariah-compliant hotels rising

The
concept of Shariah-compliant hotels, which was announced a couple of
years ago, has yet to catch on, especially in the four- and five-star
categories, said a senior hotel executive.




Dr Barbara Urasch,
Vice-President, Venatol, a hotel management firm that is planning
Shariah-compliant hotels in Europe, said: “Many of the hotel just do
not serve alcohol, they are not Shariah-compliant. There is a demand
for Shariah-compliant four- and five-star hotels not just in the region
but worldwide. Currently, there are no such hotels in this category.”

Halal standards urged

DUBAI – National standards for the production of halal food are needed to
replace outdated GCC regulations, the country’s leading halal food
producer said at a press conference organised by IHI, International Halal Integrity Alliance, during Gulfood.




Saleh Abdullah Lootah, the chief executive of the
Dubai-based Al Islami foods, said today the GCC-wide standards that the
UAE adhered to were out of step with changing manufacturing methods.

State Minister for foreign trade Kursad Tuzmen has held separate
meetings with Iranian Agriculture Minister Mohammed Reza Eskandari and

entered Saudi Arabia, following the signing of a strategic distribution
agreement with locally-based distributor Arabian Trading Supplies (ATS).

Al Islami also confirmed that it would consolidate its presence in

Five of South Africa’s halaal certifying authorities have given their
support to a call made last week by the Muslim Judicial Council to
withdraw halaal certificates for products imported from Israel. MJC PRO
Nabeweya Malick told VOC that the boycott will be extended later to the
withdrawal of halaal certificates to food outlets whose parent
companies are deemed to be strong Israeli supporters.
