Islamic group seeking to offer New Zealand businesses a “globally
recognised” halal certification is being criticised by the NZ
Federation of Islamic Associations, which says the Southeast Asian
organisation does not have the resources to do inspections here.

Reza Khedmati, director of Al-Rasoul Halal Certification, said the
company had been set up to offer New Zealand exporters an
“internationally accepted halal certification” as a result of problems
encountered with Islamic countries.

AUSTRALIA’S trade minister Simon Crean welcomed the commencement of
the country’s largest free trade agreement, the Asean-Australia-New
Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA), earlier this week in an
announcement on the ministry’s website. Australia’s
High Commissioner to Brunei, Mark Sawers, is focusing on the broader liberalisation
aspect between the three regions. Sawers told The Brunei Times yesterday that the historic
agreement, which spans 12 economies with over 600 million people and a
combined GDP of A$3.1 trillion, will lead to modest improvements in

Food safety agency gets into halal-certification

The New Zealand government is stepping into an arena it has previously tried
to stay clear of – the certification of New Zealand exports as
“halal”, or “clean” in terms of Islamic religious rules. New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) has announced that
organisations which certify halal meat for export will be subject
to government oversight “to standardise halal certification and
improve assurances to our trading partners”.
