Asda under fire over plan to sell halal meat

The deal by the National Halal group in Birmingham to sell Halal meat via their own store-in-store is a ground-breaking move for the UK Halal market. National Halal sell only high quality unstunned meat, and this will naturally cause some controversy, especially in the UK where the animal welfare lobby is very vocal.  National Halal defend their non-stun policy by saying that it is the most trauma-free method, a position that we support.

Fish gelatin could be economically beneficial

The question of Halal and Kosher gelatin is being promoted by Joe Regenstein at Cornell University.
Regenstein, head of the Cornell Kosher and Halal Food Initiative, said 99 percent of the 272,500 tons of gelatin produced in 2003 came from pork or non-religiously slaughtered beef. Clearly, with 2 billion Halal consumers, there is a potential market for fish-based gelatin products.
“When we talk about globalization, the fact that we don’t talk about
halal foods in most cases is a major oversight,” Regenstein said.

Aussie plan to push for halal standard rejected

The issue of developing international Halal standards continues to appear in all corners of the world. This issue was recently brought up in the Australian parliament, to use the Australian Government Muslim Slaughter (AGMS) programme as an international benchmark, but it was rejected.

We expect to see some further initiatives on international standards coming up under the OIC umbrella in the near future.

Turkey misses out on $2.1 trillion halal market

Turkey’s moved to develop Halal standards, and play a significant role in the Halal market are – perhaps predictably – beset with difficulties. Finding the balance between Islamic and secular issues, as far as Halal is concerned, is likely to be a delicate balancing act. If they cannot resolve this issue, they will find themselves falling behind as more countries develop national Halal standards. Whether this issue can be resolved under the OIC umbrella remains to be seen.

Canada backs halal industry in Mindanao

The Canadian International Development Agency, through the Private
Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages Phase 2 project (Pearl2), and
the Armm Business Council (ABC) have forged a memorandum of
understanding to boost support to the halal thrusts of the region.

It remains to be seen just what this will turn into, but with Canadian beef now increasingly cleared for overseas markets, Halal is becoming an important market for them. With the recent creation of the Canadian Halal Exporters Alliance, can we expect to see Canada focusing on a Halal awareness drive? If they mounted a successful campaign, it could potentially position Canadian meat up there with Aussie beef, the current choice for premium meat in the Halal market, especially in the lucrative GCC region.
