Ottawa urging Canadian food producers to explore global halal market

A growing appetite for halal products around the globe
has prompted the Canadian government to encourage businesses to taste
the market for these foods.

Canada has so far failed to make much
of an impression in the international market for products that respect
Islamic dietary laws – also known as halal. Yet Ottawa estimates the halal industry to be worth between US$500 billion and $2 trillion worldwide.

Now
government trade experts and industry insiders alike are warning
Canadian businesses they can ill afford to ignore the demographic
trends feeding increasing demand for halal and kosher products.

Muslims, Arab Americans are big players in economy

Arab Americans and Muslims account for nearly 6% of the workforce and earn between $5.4 billion and $7.7 billion a year in southeast Michigan, according to a Wayne State University report. The retail purchasing power of the US Muslim community continues to be an unrecognised force, but we expect to see this oversight changing in the short to mid-term.

Kosher food label fastest grower in US consumer market

“Kosher”
was the most frequently used claim on products launched in the US this
year, according to figures from a global products database. The “Kosher” label beat out “All Natural” and “No Additives or
Preservatives,” which were among the other most popular claims found on
products in 2007, according to figures from Mintel’s Global New
Products Database, which monitors worldwide product innovation in
consumer packaged goods markets.

This past year, 3,984 new kosher food products and 728 kosher beverages were launched. Given that the US Muslim population is approximately double the Jewish population – and growing as opposed to shrinking – we can get some idea of the staggering room for growth in the US Halal market.

Muslim-owned businesses

Shahed Amanullah, Editor-in-Chief, AltMuslim.com, has given his commentary on the recent acquisition of Al-Safa Halal. Hopefully this sale of a non-Muslim owned Halal business to a Muslim will create a higher awareness of the opportunities available in the market for Muslims to take advantage of. Men like David Muller saw a potentially profitable business idea and took full advantage of it. He complied to the requirements specified to make the products Halal, just as many non-Muslim run companies do around the world, including Nestle. What is notable here is not that there are non-Muslims running Halal businesses, but that there are so few Muslims in upper management of the production of Halal food internationally.

Fish gelatin could be economically beneficial

The question of Halal and Kosher gelatin is being promoted by Joe Regenstein at Cornell University.
Regenstein, head of the Cornell Kosher and Halal Food Initiative, said 99 percent of the 272,500 tons of gelatin produced in 2003 came from pork or non-religiously slaughtered beef. Clearly, with 2 billion Halal consumers, there is a potential market for fish-based gelatin products.
“When we talk about globalization, the fact that we don’t talk about
halal foods in most cases is a major oversight,” Regenstein said.

Canada backs halal industry in Mindanao

The Canadian International Development Agency, through the Private
Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages Phase 2 project (Pearl2), and
the Armm Business Council (ABC) have forged a memorandum of
understanding to boost support to the halal thrusts of the region.

It remains to be seen just what this will turn into, but with Canadian beef now increasingly cleared for overseas markets, Halal is becoming an important market for them. With the recent creation of the Canadian Halal Exporters Alliance, can we expect to see Canada focusing on a Halal awareness drive? If they mounted a successful campaign, it could potentially position Canadian meat up there with Aussie beef, the current choice for premium meat in the Halal market, especially in the lucrative GCC region.
