new leisure project aims to offer up to a thousand local jobs by next
March.

concept of Shariah-compliant hotels, which was announced a couple of
years ago, has yet to catch on, especially in the four- and five-star
categories, said a senior hotel executive.




Dr Barbara Urasch,
Vice-President, Venatol, a hotel management firm that is planning
Shariah-compliant hotels in Europe, said: “Many of the hotel just do
not serve alcohol, they are not Shariah-compliant. There is a demand
for Shariah-compliant four- and five-star hotels not just in the region
but worldwide. Currently, there are no such hotels in this category.”

Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia in tourism pact

Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand will launch a joint tourism package
to bring quick money into crisis-hit economies, a Thai minister said
yesterday.
The Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) yesterday declared an “IMT-GT Celebration Year” for the package. It
was inspired by the success of 2008’s “Visit IMT-GT Year”. The three
countries will jointly promote tourism, said PM’s Office Minister

Malaysian tourism industry achieves exemplary growth

Malaysia recorded a 5.1 per cent increase in tourist arrivals to
22,052,488 last year compared to 20,972,822 in 2007, Tourism Minister
Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said today.

“Despite the current global economic meltdown,
the Malaysian tourism industry has managed to achieve exemplary growth
due to intensification of the ministry’s promotional efforts,” she told
reporters on the second day of the 29th Asean Tourism Forum in Hanoi. She said that Malaysia had attracted 2,428,605 tourists from Indonesia, 1,493,789 from Thailand and 1,172,154 from Brunei.
