HDC has issued Halal Certificates for 38 Thai Products So Far

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) — The Halal Development Corporation (HDC) has issued a total of 38 halal certificates to products from Thailand’s multinational companies since its establishment in September 2006.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department S.K.Devamany said the products covered fat and oil based products as well as personal grooming products.

“HDC was formed to achieve the objective of making Malaysia a world halal hub,” he said in reply to a question from Dr Mohamed Hayati Othman (PAS-Pendang) at the Dewan Rakyat here today.

Last April, HDC was given the mandate by the Cabinet to take over the functions of Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim) in issuing the halal certificates in the country. HDC is also responsible for issuing international halal certificates.

Devamany said the role of Jakim’s Halal Hub Division was still being maintained in the areas of monitoring halal certified establishments with the help of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and the local authorities.

The monitoring is done at regular intervals and also via surprise calls on the establishments based on complaints received from the public, he said. – BERNAMA
