Ensuring that food is Halal is an important issue in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country.  However, the intricacies inherent across the global food supply chain can make guaranteeing Halal food products a significant challenge. PerkinElmer’s porcine detection kits provide Halal-certifying agencies, contract laboratories and food manufacturers with a screening capability providing on-the-spot rapid characterization of food products. Through the distribution of PerkinElmer’s porcine detection kits, the LPPOM MUI organization is equipped with the ability to make it easier, quicker and more cost effective to provide consumers with the confidence in the integrity and authenticity of food products to ensure that they are Halal.

Designed for the fast detection of porcine meat traces, PerkinElmer’s porcine detection kits can provide a positive or negative result for the presence of porcine biomarkers in less than 15 minutes. Non-technical users are able to conduct the testing through a simple interface and minimal sample preparation.  With detection limits of 0.5% for processed meat to 0.05% for raw meat, manufacturers now have an effective rapid screening tool for testing incoming raw ingredients to better ensure Halal integrity of final food products.

“The LPPOM MUI is an extremely respected body in Indonesia and their adoption of our porcine detection kit is a significant endorsement of the quality and reliability that our Halal food screening solution provides,” said Boon-Chun Tan, South Asia Pacific Environmental Marketing Director, PerkinElmer.  “We look forward to helping food processors purchasing porcine-free ingredients with utmost confidence in their Halal products while providing consumers in Indonesia with better peace of mind that the food that they are consuming is porcine-free.”

The worldwide market for Halal food products represents $635 billion ($US) of the $4 trillion spent annually on food supplies worldwide, with Asian countries accounting for over 60% of that expenditure. Halal food testing represents a key part of this important market.
