Malaysia: Hotel caught offering Ramadan buffet without Jakim cert

KUALA LUMPUR: A hotel found promoting Ramadan buffet without a halal certificate was raided by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) in Kajang today.

Jakim Halal Hub Monitoring and Enforcement division senior assistant principal director, Azizan Shaari said the hotel was the first premise raided and action taken after the enforcement of halal certificate came into force early this year.
“After investigating the hotel manager, we found that the hotel did not have the halal certificate. Action will be taken under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011,” he told reporters, adding that the operation also involved the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) ministry officers.
Azizan said inspection at the hotel’s kitchen also revealed non-halal ingredients being used by the chef.
“I urge the public, especially government departments, to ensure only hotels with the halal certificate are chosen to break fast,” he added.
Jakim took immediate action by taking down the banners written ‘Ramadan Treats’ and seized Ramadan buffet brochures which were placed at the hotel lobby.  BERNAMA
