Malaysia: Megacoral targets 15% halal market share

Megacoral Holdings Sdn Bhd, which specialises in supplying halal Chinese cuisine to hotels, is aiming to carve out 15% of the retail segment in this niche by the end of 2013.

The company, which supplies the hotels under the Happy Food brand, is planning to enter the retail market and is investing in a RM1 million new kitchen and headquarter (HQ) in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

“We’ve successfully grown the company over the last eleven years and feel that we will soon be ready to expand the company overseas to other countries that have significant Muslim population such as the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Singapore,” said Megacoral managing director Angela Leong during a press conference of the company’s HQ launching ceremony yesterday.

The company’s leading customers include the Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La Hotel, The One World Hotel, The Royale Chulan in Kuala Lumpur and The Westin Langkawi Resort and Spa.

Megacoral is benefitting from financial grants by the government under the SME Corp Malaysia business startup programme.

Megacoral executive chef and director Benny Yiu has 50 years of experience in the food industry. The company has a capacity of delivering 40,000 food items per day.

According to a statement by the Halal Industry Development Corp Sdn Bhd, with the world’s growing Muslim population, there is a great demand for provision of halal products and businesses such as Happy Food are pioneering to better serve the halal market around the globe.
