Malaysia: Miti expects RM500mil sales at incoming buying mission

MIHAS-logo-125KUALA LUMPUR: The International Trade and Industry Ministry expects to clinch RM500mil in sales during its two-day incoming buying mission (IBM).

Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the event, which began on Tuesday, had attracted strong interest from many countries participating in the World Halal Week 2013.

“Sales so far stands at RM411mil. Today is the second day and we are yet to tally the second day numbers. We expect good figures,” he said after launching the four-day World Halal Week 2013.

The forum, hosted by the ministry, features concurrent events – the International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and the World Halal Week Conference.

The IBM is an important component of MIHAS and last year it raked in sales worth RM362.63mil.

This year, 345 foreign companies from over 50 countries that are seeking halal products and services will be matched with Malaysian companies.

“We are expecting more than 20,000 visitors and are confident sales will continue to be strong, based on the overwhelming support received from participating companies, both domestic and international,” said Mustapa.

He also said Malaysia was on track to achieve the halal hub status despite facing several challenges.

“We have come a long way. One issue that we are grappling with is supply, not just food but also supply of pharmaceutical products.

“The challenge for us is to source these raw materials and convert it into halal products,” he added.
