Malaysia on right track to become main global Halal Hub

jakim.smallBEAUFORT: Malaysia is on the right track to realise its intention of becoming the main global halal hub, following increased awareness of the international community on the country’s continuous efforts in developing its halal industry.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said this was further supported by the recognition of Malaysia as among 54 reference bodies at the international level on halal certification.

He was speaking to reporters after meeting with the four wings of the Beaufort Umno division, here, today.

Jamil Khir said the importance of halal certification must be given more attention as it had become a global matter and in line with current developments, including the enforcement of the amendments to the Trade Description Act 2011 since early January.

He said there was increasing public awareness on halal products and services provided by the country’s halal industry, with double the number of applications for halal certification before the enforcement of the amended Act.

Jamil Khir said the relevant business premises in Sabah were advised to change their old halal logo or apply for the halal certificate and logo from the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) or Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department only, and not from any other body.

“The applications have increased although currently, acquiring the halal certificate and logo is not compulsory but still voluntary.”

He urged those who received the halal certification to meet the halal standard at all times, including ensuring cleanliness in food preparations to ensure consumers’ confidence in the country’s halal products.

According to the Act, only the halal certificate and logo issued by Jakim and the respective state Islamic religious affairs departments can be used. – Bernama
