Pakistan: Need for Standard and legislation on Halal

Pakistan FlagSaturday, August 24, 2013 – Islamabad—Pakistan is an emerging Halal food hub and this is the right time to capture the international halal products market worth US 3 trillion dollars by making the industry compliant with international standards and boosting up halal sector.

Chairman Punjab Halal Development Agency (PHDA) Khalil ur Rehman Khan said this during his meeting with Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid, here Friday.

Both discussed issues related with halal food products and to compliant them of international requirements. The Minister said there is strong need of developing standards and enacting a law to make our halal products. He added “ We need Halal professionals because globalisation of food trade and increased consumer awareness regarding food safety standards contribute towards new demands for halal, healthy and hygienic food”. Chairman PHDA said Pakistan possesses all imperative elements for Halal products’ production but are lacking professionals in this field.

Both agreed to organize inter-ministerial meeting and take steps to foster halal industry of Pakistan.
