Prime Minister John Key has highlighted opportunities for New Zealand to boost its trade in halal-certified food products going to markets such as Malaysia.

He told a news conference marking his first year in Government that
while New Zealand exporters are taking full advantage of the demand
some markets, there are areas where they’re missing out.

He says at a recent meeting the Prime Minister of Malaysia pointed
out the world-wide market for halal meat is worth $2 trillion.

Mr Key says New Zealand has a tiny fraction of that, despite being
the world’s largest exporter of halal dairy products and sheep
products, and the third or fourth in the world as an exporter of halal
beef products.
