In an aggressive move to increase Halal exports,
Thailand’s Commerce Ministry has signed two export deals.
The deals with the French Casino Group which has 9,850
outlets and the Belgium-based Dehaize which has 2,705 stores worldwide, is an
attempt to increase Halal exports of cooked canned food primarily to the EU
market’s Muslim population of 7-8%.

According to the Commerce Ministry,
Thailand’s present global Halal market amounts to 1%. the signing of the two
agreements, with Casino and Dehaise offers many opportunities, particularly for
Southern Thailand’s Halal producers, to increase exports.
