BoI hosts Halal food seminar in Hat Yai

The
Board of Investment and Malaysia’s Halal Industry Development
Corporation will jointly host a halal food seminar during January 18-21
in Hat Yai, Songkhla. About 20 Malaysian investors will be invited for
discussion with Thai businessmen, to explore investment opportunities
in the South particularly the 5 Southearnmost provinces.

Vasana Mututanon, director of
the International Affairs Bureau, said Thailand needs to focus more on
halal food production to cash in on the growing demand. The BOI is ready to support future cooperation between the Thai and Malaysian investors, she said.

Thailand exported halal food worth US$5.19 billion in 2008 and $2.5
billion in the first 7 months of 2009. The value dropped as some Thai
products could not meet export standards.
