Research: New book published on halal slaughter and animal welfare

A new book outlining ways of protecting the welfare of animals during halal slaughter has been published by the globally renowned publisher, Springer Nature. The author, Dr Awal Fuseini, is a senior halal sector manager at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) in the UK, who has widely published on halal meat production and animal welfare.

The book covers a wide range of topics, including pre-slaughter handling and bleeding of poultry, cattle and sheep. It also delves into the socio-political issues around halal meat production, highlighting the rise in anti-halal movements in some countries in the West. The science of conscious perception is also explained in greater detail with emphasis on the welfare aspects of stun and non-stun slaughter.

Dr Fuseini commented:

“The book has gone through rigorous peer review by experts in the field of animal welfare and I hope readers will gain an understanding of the welfare issues around slaughter and how to mitigate them.”
