UK: Government meeting to consider labeling of meat to include slaughter method

Recently the Government have indicated that they are willing to consider labeling of meat to include slaughter method and, as this is likely to cover religious methods.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW) officers, Angela Smith MP, Rebecca Pow MP, Henry Smith MP and Lord Trees have contacted key stakeholders who wish to join a round table on method of production and slaughter labeling on Tuesday at the House of Commons.

The discussions at the meeting will be about:

  1. Method of Production Labeling

Clear method of production labels should be displayed on the front of packaging of all meat and dairy products. As per mandatory method of production labeling for eggs, intensive methods of production should be labelled in addition to the higher welfare options. Do you agree?

  1. Method of Slaughter Labeling?

An EU-wide survey reported that 72% of consumers what to know the method of slaughter for the meat they eat. Therefore, method of slaughter labels should be displayed on the front of packaging of all meat and dairy productions. This would encompass all religious methods. Do you agree?
