Waiter, there’s a pig in my chicken!

A well presented and rather disturbing bit of investigative journalism about the added ingredients that may be in our chicken products. It is another example of where the interests of the Muslim community and the general public coincide for the common good.

170 Halal-certified hotel kitchens…and counting

Malaysia’s HDC continues to speed up the certification process in Malaysia. Reports that the government will only use hotels with Halal certified kitchens for government functions has led to a flurry of applications from hotels, and HDC seems to be keeping pace with demand…something that Jakim was not always able to do. Compare this with the ‘Halal Revolution’ article below.

The Halal Revolution

A good article from the Middle East Hotelier, recognising that there is a Halal food revolution taking place in the Hotel industry. The article points out that the strategic move to make is to convert to completely Halal, because that means that you can serve the whole market. Any other approach either limits the market, or requires a double process. Halal is good for the bottom line.

Quick continues its implantation in Algeria

Here is a fast food chain that is ‘adapting its menu’ to meet the demand for Halal meat in Algeria. But being the ‘number 3’ hamburger chain in Europe we would hope their franchisees would realise the potential of turning their outlets Halal to include the millions of muslims across Europe and travelling to Europe as their customers. Their outlets in Morocco must be Halal as well, but would need this confirmed.

British Airways launches new ‘taste team’

It is a good sign – and good business sense – that British Airways is catering to the Muslim Halal food market in the GCC region by giving them a nice serving of British cuisine Halal style! I thought the national dish for Britain was curry these days! This is all in line with the new push on Halal tourism. At least if you can eat good food in the air it might make you feel a bit better about paying the higher airfares.

From Adelaide to the World

When you hear Steve Marafiote has been working in the food business for
more than 20 years it might not come as a surprise to discover his
company turns over $25 million a year. What might surprise is that Marafiote is only 32. His company
Australian Quality Plus is less than five years old and his first job
in the industry was serving customers in his family’s fruit shop in
Adelaide.

Always nice to read a success story, especially when Halal is on the menu!

Dietary laws go to college

The trend to offer kosher and Halal dietary options at Universities in the US continues to increase. This is a potentially attractive opportunity for food service and vending machine companies able to fill this gap, and we expect to see this trend continue. It is also an area where the Jews and the Muslims seem to find cooperation useful and relatively easy.

Officials need to show hardship if they want to deny Halal meals to an inmate

Arizona prison officials need to show a
real hardship if they want to deny halal meals to a Muslim inmate, the
9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday. In a
unanimous ruling, the judges overturned a lower court decision which
accepted the claims of the state Department of Corrections that
providing the meals to Amin Shakur would create additional costs and
administrative burdens. The appellate judges said there was no evidence
that the state actually looked into the real cost. The judges
also noted that the state already provides two kinds of kosher meals
for Jewish inmates.
