Global Halal Conference at Anuga 2009

News from the Anuga Trade Show that is held in Cologne, Germany 10-14 Oct. 2009:

“Halal” food
and beverages is one of the food industry’s most dynamically growing
product groups, a trend that also can be served by European suppliers,
of course. Due to the fact that especially Muslim communities are
growing in numbers, a further growth of the demand for Halal Food is
one of the fastest and effective growing food sectors in the world and
will remain so for many years. With the first “Global Halal Conference”
at Anuga featuring the participation of experts from all over the
world, we want to emphasize and highlight this aspect.

Exports are Turkey’s first venture into halal market

Following
the global trend in the certification of halal foods, goods prepared in

Research Association (G?MDES) has become the first body to issue halal
certificates in Turkey, currently for foodstuffs that are being

Cargill adds remote video auditing at slaughter plants

Cargill
said Monday it has begun implementing a third-party video auditing
program to bolster the company’s animal welfare protection systems and
will have the program in place at all of its U.S. beef slaughter plants
by the end of 2009. I wonder if this practise will find its way into their Better Beef plant in Canada, and other facilities in the Halal sector?

Turkey plans Halal trade expo in August

HALALISTEXPO
- Halal Products Trade Fair will be held at Istanbul Exhibiton Center
between August 13th and 16th. It is expected that hundreds of companies
from around the world will join Halalistexpo and 3 billion dollars
worth of trade is targeted.

Don’t be sheepish about a new industry

British Columbia currently supplies
less than 25 per cent of the domestic lamb market. That means that
three-quarters of the lamb consumed in this province is imported from
Alberta, the United States, or New Zealand. At one of the Saturday

The Growing Halal and Kosher Markets

It isn’t just kosher-observant Jews and halal-observant Muslims who are
driving the sacred foods market. Many consumers who are concerned about
food safety are turning to kosher- and halal-certified foods because of
the perception that they are “cleaner” and more closely supervised
during the manufacturing process.

Vegans, vegetarians and consumers
with food intolerances are drawn to the products as well because the
certification labeling means that they can quickly see if a food
contains, for example, dairy. Manufacturers are also pursuing
certification because it can help open up new regional markets in
cities where buyers are more likely to be accepting of certified
products.

Turkey, Iran can work together in halal food

Turkish
State Minister for foreign trade Kursad Tuzmen has held separate
meetings with Iranian Agriculture Minister Mohammed Reza Eskandari and
Petroleum Minister Qolam Hosein Nozari in Tehran. At the meeting with Eskandari, Tuzmen said that Turkey and Iran should increase agricultural trade. Tuzmen said the two countries could work together in halal food.

Brazilian Halal exports to the Middle East to cross US$6.38 billion in 2008

Brazilian
Halal exports to the Middle East are expected to exceed USD 6.38
billion in 2008, as the demand for beef meat and poultry continues to
rise in the region. Industry reports have revealed that 33 per cent of
Brazilian poultry and 40 per cent of its meat production are being
supplied to the global Halal market, which is largely concentrated
within the region.
