Muslims not prepared to declare cloning ‘halal’

The issue of cloning certainly goes well beyond whether or not an animal is stunned before Halal slaughter and the method used in the slaughtering of it. This also comes under the category of ‘ethical’ which is also now a much broader issue with the production of food today. As this question becomes better researched from a Halal perspective perhaps the wisdom of the Islamic shariah will bring clarity on this for everyone questioning whether it is ethical to produce cloned animals for human consumption. Perhaps this is an issue to be addressed to the Shariah scholars and scientists at the upcoming International Halal Market Conference being held on the 16-17 August in Brunei Darussalam.

Ingredients Middle East attracts 1,732 regional buyers

Sourcing Halal ingredients is more and more going to become an issue in the GCC and other countries where Halal food is produced. Hopefully this show will assist the manufacturers, and also encourage ingredients companies to obtain Halal certification for their products to broaden their business potential.

Creating Power Brands for SMEs

Brunei is getting its SME companies ready for taking their products out to the world. With the Brunei Halal Premium brand getting ready to launch getting their Halal industry enterprises trained in the best way to brand their products is essential to the project. Brunei will also be holding the International Halal Market Conference on the 16-17 August when they will be bringing in successful SME companies to have dialogues on how they managed to brand their products and get them into the international Halal marketplace to inspire these local companies and others who will be attending the conference. They will also have a session with Shariah scholars, Scientists and industry leaders to enable some of the issues that need clarifying in Halal to be addressed.

HDC Receives 380 Applications For Halal Certification

No surprise that HDC is getting this amount of queries for Halal certifications, everyone wants their Halal certification in Malaysia. What we hope though is that the processing for this number of certifications is done quickly and efficiently under HDC now, as JAKIM for years was criticised about not being able to do. The markets both domestic and internationally will watch with a great deal of interest the outcome of this shift over to the Halal Industry Development Corporation.

British Airways launches new ‘taste team’

It is a good sign – and good business sense – that British Airways is catering to the Muslim Halal food market in the GCC region by giving them a nice serving of British cuisine Halal style! I thought the national dish for Britain was curry these days! This is all in line with the new push on Halal tourism. At least if you can eat good food in the air it might make you feel a bit better about paying the higher airfares.

Halal: The Original Ethical Meat Eating?

Such a relief to finally read an article where someone has got the point and actually put ethical meat consumption and Halal together. More and more, especially if the Halal Industry ups its standards, the non-Muslim consumer will recognise this about Halal meat and seek it out, as many already do.

Minnesota’s Holy Land is leading by example

Every now and again you have an experience that reaffirms your belief in all that’s good, in humanity, generosity, good food and good company. Our recent visit to Holy Land in Minneapolis was just such an experience. Holy Land is a multi-functional Halal market zone with a bakery, grocery store, restaurant, catering service and general all-round meeting place that was filled with the hum of a growing community.

The World’s Top 20 Public Intellectuals

What I find interesting about this ranking is that at first glance one is impressed at how the top 10 intellectuals voted for are all Muslim. Then you read that 500,000 ballots were cast in 4 weeks, which also is impressive. However, when you carry on reading the article look and see how the candidates themselves were instrumental in campaigning to put themselves into the top 10 through their own publications and websites! This is the power of the press and the internet.

OIC: Malaysian FM Yatim adressed the 35th council of foreign ministers

With so much on the agenda at the 35th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC it does not look like Malaysia’s Foreign Minister was able to do much but mention the names of the Halal initiatives that Malaysia is trying to introduce to the OIC in his 15 minute address. Hopefully he was able to gather some support on the sidelines during the meetings. Seems these meetings are just to remind each other what they did not follow up on from the last meeting. Though with such a long list of very serious issues to be addressed during these sessions, adding the development of International Halal
Standards, the International Halal Integrity Alliance, and an International Zakat Organisation to the list might just be asking too much.  Perhaps these will need to be implemented by a different body.

Understanding Halal Order

With an excellent Halal Standard already created by Brunei Ministry of Religious Affairs, Brunei is ready for the next phase of their Brunei Halal programme which is the training of the relevant users of the Halal certification on the requirements and terms of it.

Brunei will also be holding the International Halal Market Conference on the 15-16 August 2008 in order to further educate their delegates through the experiences of others who have started up in a Halal business, the possibility of Halal pharmaceuticals, and also looking at the new role of Islamic tourism in the Halal industry, among the topics being discussed. But essential to the conference will be the Shariah & Science session with Islamic Scholars, Scientists and the Halal industry experts jointly looking at current issues surrounding Halal.

Gulfood to expand to become Middle East’s largest trade exhibition in 2009

Gulfood expanding was inevitable, but adding the new Ingredients Middle East into the show was a good strategic move. Though Gulfood has never focused on Halal as a category in its own right at the show, many of the companies of course are certified Halal to enable them to export to the region. Having the ingredients on board during this huge event will assist manufacturers wanting to enter into the Halal food industry source their certified ingredients. One stop shop.

Halal butchers under threat from superstores

Halal butchers under threat from superstores

Patterns do repeat themselves. With the fierce competition and low margins that the food retailng giants operate with, they are constantly on the lookout for new profit centres. That usually means taking business away from someone else. The traditional corner store has long been a favourite target of the supermarkets, but now those neighbourhood shops are also the Halal shops and butchers.

The big retailers are well aware that the Muslim consumer is doing most of their shopping in the supermarkets – but not buying their Halal meats and other items there. This is partly because of non-availability and partly an issue of trust. Now that the big guns are aiming at the Halal consumer, expect to see more and more Halal produce on their shelves.

And as for the High Street….?
