Halal in America – the time is now

The 46th Annual Convention of the Islamic Society of North America was
held in Washington DC over the July 4th holiday weekend. Official
numbers have not yet been published, but, as always, this event brings
tens of thousands of American Muslims together for the convention,
bazaar and side sessions.



This year, in collaboration with the American Halal Association, ISNA
held a Halal industry session entitled “Halal in America – the time is
now!” to explore the opportunities and issues brought about by the
current global expansion in the Halal market.

At the 2009 Taipei International Food Show,
held from Tuesday until Friday, Taiwan for the first time opened a Halal
Pavilion with some 40 companies setting up booths. The
halal foods they showcased were few – rice, biscuits, soya sauce,
vinegar, picked vegetables, chocolate paste and an ice desert called
“Snow Ice.”Many Taiwanese queued up for a free cup of Snow Ice, but few foreign buyers placed orders for the halal products.

The sixth edition of Thaifex – World of Food Asia ended with a bang.
21,101 trade visitors crowded the halls of Thaifex – World of Food Asia
2009, conducting business with the 988 exhibitors from 21 countries/
regions. Some 21% (4,431) of the visitors came from abroad,
representing 104 countries/ regions around the world. The figures are
quite consistent with the last two fairs.

HALAL Exchange, a web-based platform for buyers and suppliers to
showcase their products, expects to double its supplier base in
Malaysia to 200 this year.




At the just-ended MIHAS, major retailer Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd
came on board to use the exchange platform. The platform enables the
retailer to have a comprehensive global sourcing solution ensuring
visibility to an international base of suppliers and increased
administrative efficiencies for trade processes.





“It provides
us with an industry-leading platform that not only increases our
potential supplier base, but also supports our drive to improve our
internal information processing and deliver increased value to our
